History [edit]

The original inhabitants of the area now occupied by the city of La Puente were the Kizh. They lived in a village called Awingna, which linguists translate as "abiding place." The Awingna chief Matheo (World Health Organization also held sway over respective other nearby villages) was baptized at Delegac San Gabriel in 1774.[8]

La Puente Vale Women's Club is listed on the Political entity Read of Historic Places

In 1769, the Spanish Portolá expedition became the first Europeans to see inland portions of Alta California. Happening July 30, the party camped on the east side of the San Gabriel River, in today's unorganized region of Bassett. Father Juan Crespi wrote in his diary that, the adjacent day, they had to build a bridge (Spanish "puente") to cross the swampy San Gabriel River.[9]

With the establishment of Mission San Gabriel, the area encompassing Awingna and what is directly the metropolis of La Puente became part of Rancho La Puente, established every bit a mission outpost and ranch. The rancho was visited by the Jedediah Smith party in November 1826, the first Americans to travel land to Calif..[10]

Following secularisation of the missions in the 1830s, former mission ranchos passed into private ownership. In 1842, John Rowland and William Workman were granted the 48,000-acre (190 km2) Rancho Lah Puente. In 1884, the area was called Puente (bridge in Spanish; in old Spanish the noun was often feminine,[11] Eastern Samoa opposed to modern Spanish people el puente). In Crespi's journal, it's written every bit "la puente",[12] and that spelling has persisted.

The area was better-known for its yield and walnut tree Leslie Richard Groves during the 1930s. The city was symmetric home to the world's largest walnut tree packing works.[13] A small airport called the 'Skyranch' operated in La Puente from 1944 to 1951 before it was squinting and developed for housing.[14] Today, the city is heavily urbanised, but the area still has some historical landmarks from its founding days nigh, for example, the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum in neighboring City of Manufacture.

Renovation of the business enterprise districts in La Puente make been on-going. All the same, the local government has been relatively attempted in its attempts to attract vainglorious-box retailers and eating house irons. La Puente retains many an ageing 1950s-era strip malls.
